Week of October 19

    

Hello Families!

Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me and chat about your student and their goals for this year! It was so great to finally see so many of you and officially meet you.

Daily Student Health Screener:

Click here for a checklist of symptoms and situations to keep a focused eye on this year. The teachers are logging daily health checks, as well. We are doubling down on health and wellness in efforts to protect our ability to meet for in-person learning. Thank you for your cooperation on this. 

Halloween Party:

Our classroom Halloween party will be on Friday October 30th. It will look a bit different this year since families are not able to come into the classroom. I'll put more information out in next week's blog regarding items that we may need donated. Do you have a fun idea for our classroom party this year? Please reach out!

Communication from Mrs. Bawks regarding costumes: Your student will still be able to dress up (dressing up is optional)! Please make sure your student's costume is comfortable as they will need to wear it all day during our regular learning activities (rather than changing into it like they've done in previous years). Costume masks will not be allowed this year; as in previous years, gore and weapons are not allowed.

This week's learning:

Classroom Community: We started a really fun project that we will be watching and learning about over the next 3 weeks: eggs! These eggs came from my own flock of chickens and we are hopeful that they will hatch successfully (they should be hatching, if all goes well, the first week of November). 

ELA: During our ELA time, we will be starting our first reader's theater unit. Reader's theater combines both reading practice and performance. This week, we will be focusing on appropriate pausing while reading.

Writing: Students had a good time reading a variety of stories and determining if they were imagined narratives or not. This week, we will be continuing to develop our characters and setting.

Math: We are nearing the end of our first unit in math! This initial unit is especially important this year in ensuring that your student has a strong foundation of skills learned in 3rd grade. 

Math learning the week:

Monday: No School

Tuesday: Completing Lesson 1-8

Wednesday: Lesson 1-9: U.S. traditional subtraction

Thursday: Lesson 1-10: Converting between yards, feet and inches.

Friday: Review day

Science/Social Studies: We will begin our first unit in social studies this week: Foundations in Social Studies. In the first lesson, students will practice the skills of historical inquiry as they review what they have previously learned about Michigan history in 3rd grade. We will be focusing on the historical question of "when?" and the concept of chronology.

Homework reminder: Homework each week consists of reading 20+ minutes at home (this can be a library book, magazine, newspaper, online book, etc) and practicing multiplication and division facts 1 through 12. Mastering multiplication and division facts is vital to our learning this year.

Students will also have a math home link page to work on most days of the week. I will always include the lessons we are working on in the blog each week so that you know when to work on each home link. These home links are not going to be turned back in, but I highly recommend that students work on them each week so that they can show you what they have worked on. I don't mind if students work a bit ahead in the packet; it is also ok if you miss a night and have to come back to that particular lesson on a different day. Times are unpredictable and I completely understand that you may have prior commitments on certain days of the week.
