Click here for a checklist of symptoms and situations to keep a focused eye on this year. The teachers are logging daily health checks, as well. We are doubling down on health and wellness in efforts to protect our ability to meet for in-person learning. Thank you for your cooperation on this. 

Halloween Party:

Our classroom Halloween party is this coming Friday October 30th. It will look a bit different this year since families are not able to come into the classroom but I will be doing some fun activities with the kids to celebrate! Communication from Mrs. Bawks regarding costumes: Your student will still be able to dress up (dressing up is optional)! Please make sure your student's costume is comfortable as they will need to wear it all day during our regular learning activities (rather than changing into it like they've done in previous years). Costume masks will not be allowed this year; as in previous years, gore and weapons are not allowed.

This week's learning:

Classroom Community: During our classroom read aloud, we've been reading the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio. The book has provided us with MANY amazing conversations about kindness, courage and empathy. This week, I'll be introducing the students to our #choosekind challenge. For each kind deed that a student performs, we will be putting a marble into a jar. When the jar is complete, we can submit our entry on Choose Kind website to become a certified Choose Kind classroom!

ELA: The students had a great time practicing their reader's theater last week and will be performing it for each other this coming week. We will also begin our 2nd unit this week: determining text importance and identifying sequence of events. While we are moving on from our main idea and detail unit, this is a topic that we continue to circle back to every week.

Writing: We are having so much fun writing our imagined narratives! Last week, we planned out our main character and supporting character along with the setting. Students also began writing their introductory paragraph that tells when, where, who, hint of the problem and a hook to get their reader interested in their story. This week, we will be planning out the rest of our story including the problem and the solution.

Math: We are entering into our last week of our first math unit. Your student will come home with a study guide on Thursday; please take some time to review the Unit 1 home links and the study guide with your student before their test on Monday November 2.

Math learning the week:

Monday: Lesson 1-11: Exploring properties of points, line segments, lines and rays.

Tuesday: Lesson 1-2: Learning about properties of angles, triangle and quadrilaterals

Wednesday: Lesson 1-13: Develop a formula for finding the perimeter of a rectangle.

Thursday: Unit 1 Study Guide comes home.

Friday: Review day

Science/Social Studies: This week we are learning how sound vibrations are actually *waves* that travel through the air. We will see direct evidence of this by watching videos taken in slow motion and special lighting.

Here's a YouTube video that shows some of these same clips, and explains the effect in more advanced terms: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=px3oVGXr4mo  You can support your child’s learning by watching this together (please watch together after Wednesday as we are doing the learning activity Monday and Tuesday), and inviting them to explain to you what’s happening as they see the sound waves.

Homework reminder: Homework each week consists of reading 20+ minutes at home (this can be a library book, magazine, newspaper, online book, etc) and practicing multiplication and division facts 1 through 12. Mastering multiplication and division facts is vital to our learning this year.

Students will also have a math home link page to work on most days of the week. I will always include the lessons we are working on in the blog each week so that you know when to work on each home link. These home links are not going to be turned back in, but I highly recommend that students work on them each week so that they can show you what they have worked on. I don't mind if students work a bit ahead in the packet; it is also ok if you miss a night and have to come back to that particular lesson on a different day. Times are unpredictable and I completely understand that you may have prior commitments on certain days of the week.
