Scholastic Book Orders - Due Friday March 19:
Ordering books is completely optional but is a fantastic way to grow your at-home library collection at a low cost!
Each book that is ordered helps our classroom to earn free books for our class library and the students LOVE to see what new books we receive each month.

"Bucks for Brown" is back this March!
BUCKS FOR BROWN is a school-wide fundraiser that will celebrate our love of literacy and commitment to our school community. This is Brown School’s ONLY significant fundraiser for the year. The goal is to raise enough funds to support the PTO annual budget, which sponsors events such as popcorn days, teacher grants for classrooms, playground enrichment activities, LEGO Night and so much more! On April 1st, our school will celebrate with a reading event inclusive of all students after collectively raising “Bucks for Brown.”
Information packets came home Friday, March 12. We greatly appreciate your ongoing support & generosity!
Our class would love to make some of these Bots to spread positivity around our school and community but we need your help. We are in need of some supplies to make our bots; if you're able to donate any of the items below (or if you'd like to donate money so I can purchase some) we would greatly appreciate it!!

This week's learning:Positivity Project (P2): This coming week we will be focusing on the character strength of "Love of Learning" - You master new skills and topics on your own or in school.
ELA & Writing: This week, we will begin our focus on nonfiction text structures. Nonfiction text structures, which are the way the text is organized by the author, are split up into five types: cause and effect, description, chronological order, problem and solution and compare and contrast. We will focus on both reading and writing about each of these text structures over the next 5 weeks; this week we will begin with compare and contrast.
Math: This week we will be finishing up unit 6 by focusing on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers and multiplying fractions by a whole number.
Monday: No School
Tuesday: Lesson 6-12: I can add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers to solve number stories
Wednesday: Lesson 6-13: I can multiply fractions by a whole number.
Thursday: Lesson 6 Study Guide and Review Day (the study guide for this unit will come home today).
Friday: Review/Catch Up Day
Looking to extend your child's learning in math at home?
I highly recommend having them work on Khan Academy (we use this in class)! Students have access to the assignments that I've put onto Khan Academy for them (they use these during our math workshop time) and they can also work on their "course mastery." Khan Academy will continue to work them through 4th grade concepts and beyond (for those students who are ready to begin learning skills beyond the elementary level) and provides video explanations to help them work through the content. They also have courses to practice reading and language arts, computer programing (Pixar in a Box has historically been very popular with students in my classroom!), growth mindset, careers and much more!
Science: We begin our last science unit this week! This unit is called "Energizing Everything" and students will explore how energy makes things go, from powering vehicles to moving one’s body. Students will experiment with rubber bands to discover the relationship between how much energy is stored in a material and how much is released. They will investigate the role that hills play in making roller coasters move and the energy transfer that happens when two objects collide. Students will realize that thinking about the world in terms of energy helps them make sense of how and why things speed up and slow down. Hands-on activities focus on engineering, testing hypotheses and using results to develop their ideas.
Social Studies: This week we will be learning about the impact of immigration in the United States. Big ideas from this lesson are:
- Immigrants brought their culture with them when they immigrated to the United States. This included traditions, foods, stories, languages, music, values and beliefs.
- Different ethnic groups settled in different regions.
- The cultural influences of these various ethnic groups are evident in these regions.
- Immigration has resulted in significant cultural diversity in the United States.
Homework: Homework each week consists of reading 20+ minutes at home (this can be a library book, magazine, newspaper, online book, etc) and practicing multiplication and division facts 1 through 12. Mastering multiplication and division facts is vital to our learning this year.
