"Bucks for Brown" is back this March!

BUCKS FOR BROWN is a school-wide fundraiser that will celebrate our love of literacy and commitment to our school community. This is Brown School’s ONLY significant fundraiser for the year. The goal is to raise enough funds to support the PTO annual budget, which sponsors events such as popcorn days, teacher grants for classrooms, playground enrichment activities, LEGO Night and so much more! On April 1st, our school will celebrate with a reading event inclusive of all students after collectively raising “Bucks for Brown.”
Information packets came home Friday, March 12. We greatly appreciate your ongoing support & generosity!
A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who was able to donate markers and money towards the creation of our Bots. At this time, it looks like we will be all set with materials. We can't wait to show you the Bots we create!

This week's learning:Positivity Project (P2): This coming week we will be focusing on the character strength of "Other People Matter: Identify good in others" - You work hard to identify and value others' strengths.
ELA & Writing: Our nonfiction text structure focus for this week is cause and effect. Cause and effect is a type of text structure that writers use to describe an event or several events (the cause) and the event or events that follow, or result (the effect).
Math: This week we will begin our week by taking our Unit 6 test (the study guide came home on Thursday) and then will be starting our next unit (we are going back to Unit 5 to learn more about fractions and mixed numbers).
Monday: Unit 6 Test
Tuesday: Lesson 5-1: I can decompose fractions into sums of fractions with the same denominator.
Wednesday: Lesson 5-2: I can find the whole when given a fractional part.
Thursday: Lesson 5-3: I can add fractions (of the same whole, with like denominators) to solve number stories.
Friday: Review/Catch Up Day
Looking to extend your child's learning in math at home?
I highly recommend having them work on Khan Academy (we use this in class)! Students have access to the assignments that I've put onto Khan Academy for them (they use these during our math workshop time) and they can also work on their "course mastery." Khan Academy will continue to work them through 4th grade concepts and beyond (for those students who are ready to begin learning skills beyond the elementary level) and provides video explanations to help them work through the content. They also have courses to practice reading and language arts, computer programing (Pixar in a Box has historically been very popular with students in my classroom!), growth mindset, careers and much more!
Science: Last week in science, we started a new unit that’s all about energy! This week we will learn that when something is moving, it has energy. Your child will also learn how energy can be stored in food, batteries, gasoline, and even rubber bands. We will build an amusement park ride that uses rubber bands and will figure out how to create the fastest, most exciting ride!

Social Studies: This week we will continue learning about the impact of immigration in the United States. Big ideas from this lesson are:
- Immigrants brought their culture with them when they immigrated to the United States. This included traditions, foods, stories, languages, music, values and beliefs.
- Different ethnic groups settled in different regions.
- The cultural influences of these various ethnic groups are evident in these regions.
- Immigration has resulted in significant cultural diversity in the United States.
Homework: Homework each week consists of reading 20+ minutes at home (this can be a library book, magazine, newspaper, online book, etc) and practicing multiplication and division facts 1 through 12. Mastering multiplication and division facts is vital to our learning this year.
