Scholastic Book Orders - Due Friday March 19:

Each month, I'll be sending home a set of Scholastic book order forms. Ordering books is completely optional but is a fantastic way to grow your at-home library collection at a low cost.

Each book that is ordered helps our classroom to earn free books for our class library and the students LOVE to see what new books we receive each month.
If you are ever interested in ordering books as a gift and want me to set them aside for you to pick up, please let me know.

"Bucks for Brown" is back this March!

BUCKS FOR BROWN is a school-wide fundraiser that will celebrate our love of literacy and commitment to our school community. This is Brown School’s ONLY significant fundraiser for the year. The goal is to raise enough funds to support the PTO annual budget, which sponsors events such as popcorn days, teacher grants for classrooms, playground enrichment activities, LEGO Night and so much more! On April 1st, our school will celebrate with a reading event inclusive of all students after collectively raising “Bucks for Brown.”

Please look for more information to come home Friday, March 12. We greatly appreciate your ongoing support & generosity!

Click here for a checklist of symptoms and situations to keep a focused eye on this year. The teachers are logging daily health checks, as well. We are doubling down on health and wellness in efforts to protect our ability to meet for in-person learning. Thank you for your cooperation on this.

This week's learning:

Positivity Project (P2): This coming week we will be focusing on the character strength of "Social Intelligence" - You are aware of other people’s thoughts and feelings. You understand why they do things.

ELA: This week, we will continue to focus on making connections and evaluate fact and opinion. We will:

-Identify facts and opinions in a passage. 

-Identify and use signal words for opinions. 

-Make connections to understand a text.

Writing: This week we will finish sharing out our opinion writing pieces and will also be completing our "If I Lived in a Snow Globe" writing piece.

Math:  This week we will be moving ahead to Unit 6 (we will come back around to Unit 5 later this year) where we will focus on division and angles.

Monday: Lesson 6-2: I can find missing side lengths of rectangles.

Tuesday: Lesson 6-9: I can make an angle measurer and use it to measure angles.

Wednesday: Lesson 6-10: I can measure angles with a half-circle protractor

Thursday: Lesson 6-11: I can add and subtract to find unknown angle measures.

Friday: Review/Catch Up Day

Looking to extend your child's learning in math at home?

I highly recommend having them work on Khan Academy (we use this in class)! Students have access to the assignments that I've put onto Khan Academy for them (they use these during our math workshop time) and they can also work on their "course mastery." Khan Academy will continue to work them through 4th grade concepts and beyond (for those students who are ready to begin learning skills beyond the elementary level) and provides video explanations to help them work through the content. They also have courses to practice reading and language arts, computer programing (Pixar in a Box has historically been very popular with students in my classroom!), growth mindset, careers and much more!

Social Studies: This week we will be learning about push and pull factors that have influenced movement within the United States. Big ideas from this lesson are:

• Both geographers and historians have studied how and why people have moved within the United States.
• Push factors are reasons people leave a place. Some examples of push factors include a lack of freedom, a shortage of jobs, war, famine, or high cost of living. 
• Pull factors are reasons why people settle in a particular place. Some examples of pull factors include economic opportunities, freedom, family, or culture.
• Not everybody freely chose to move to new places in the United States. Native Americans were often forced off their land and forced to move to new places.
• People continue to move within the United States.

Homework:  Homework each week consists of reading 20+ minutes at home (this can be a library book, magazine, newspaper, online book, etc) and practicing multiplication and division facts 1 through 12. Mastering multiplication and division facts is vital to our learning this year.
